How to Connect a Device Using Red, White & Yellow RCA Cables to Your TV

Some newer TV models no longer include a Composite/Mini AV input for devices that use traditional red, white, and yellow RCA cables.

If your TV does not have a Composite/Mini AV input, this is part of the TV's design and does not mean that a port or adapter is missing.

What Devices May Be Affected?

Older devices may use composite/RCA connections, including:

  • DVD players
  • VCRs
  • Older gaming consoles
  • Cable or satellite boxes
  • Other legacy audio/video equipment

How Can I Connect My Device?

If your device only has red, white, and yellow RCA outputs and your TV has an available HDMI input, you may be able to use a Composite/AV-to-HDMI converter.

The converter connects to the RCA cables from your device and converts the audio and video signal to HDMI for connection to your TV.

You can find compatible converters from many electronics retailers. One example is an RCA/AV-to-HDMI converter on Amazon: Amazon.com: BD&M RCA to HDMI Converter, AV to HDMI Adapter

Before Purchasing an Adapter

Please verify:

  • The type of output connection on your DVD player, gaming console, or other device.
  • The available input connections on your TV.
  • That the converter supports the correct signal direction — Composite/AV to HDMI when connecting an older RCA device to an HDMI TV.

Third-party adapters and converters are sold separately and are not included with TV models that do not support Composite/Mini AV connections.

Compatibility and performance of third-party accessories may vary. Please refer to the accessory manufacturer's specifications before purchasing.
